Despite the declaration that we are living in a “post-racial America,” multiple recent events in which Black lives were prematurely ended have sparked a racial reckoning within the United States. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions with a long history of addressing racial disparities and injustices whose relevance is being recognized in light of these recent events. It is essential to give voice to those who represent the ongoing challenges, aspirations, and impact of HBCUs in the 21st century in upholding their collective mission to educate students of color who were historically excluded from institutions of higher education.

Contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 21st Century focuses on the role of HBCUs in contemporary American society as diverse and inclusive environments that continue to positively impact historically excluded students. Editor/Author Biographies
Anisah Bagasra is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Kennesaw State University who focuses on behavioral health research within ethnic and religious minority communities, with an interest in perceptions of mental illness and their influence on help-seeking behaviors. Dr. Bagasra previously designed a psychology major for Claflin University and oversaw the creation of online degree programs

Alison Mc Letchie obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology in 2013, M.A. in Anthropology, and Certificate in Museum Management in 2003 from the University of South Carolina (USC). Her research interest includes race; ethnicity; economic inequality; calypso; religion; Caribbean Carnivals; student behavioral and sexual health, and inclusion and diversity on HBCU campuses; la Divina Pastora; and Caribbean Catholic music. Dr. Mc Letchie is an Assistant Professor at South Carolina State University teaching anthropology and sociology in the Department of Social Sciences.

Reverend Dr. Jonathan Wesley is a millennial, critical, interdisciplinary, culturally responsive pracdivist (Practitioner-Academic-Activist-Artist) who is an ordained member of the clergy and identifies as queer in every possible way. Having a tri-vocational career, Dr. Wesley has served a diverse portfolio of higher education institutions, government agencies, faith communities, and non-profit organizations in various roles which have provided him with the necessary experience to be an effective agent of personal, systemic, and structural change. He lives by the mantra "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living will not be in vain." While living authentically and proudly as he is per his intersecting identities comes with a cost, Dr. Wesley believes it is a price worth paying unapologetically. Dr. Wesley earned a BA in Sociology (Claflin University - HBCU), an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration (Columbia College), graduate certificates in Leadership and Pastoral Counseling, an MA in Religion and Public Life (Emory University, Candler School of Theology), and a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies (Georgia State University) where he received the competitive Provost's Dissertation Award. He is also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated which is affiliated with the Divine 9. As an experienced and passionate leader in diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social justice, Dr. Wesley has over 10 years of experience transforming systems and lives. He has served in various roles throughout his career and leads through the lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social justice. He has skills and experiences that include but are not limited to teaching, training, research, programming, project management, strategic planning, community relations, policy, change management, advocacy, management, and assessment.
