Introduction

For 25 years, Institutions of higher education across North America and around the world have been climate champions, leading by example through energy and infrastructure, operations, and mission-aligned experiential education that develops the leaders of the future.

Objective

Authors will relate examples of signature initiatives, highlight measurable successes, acknowledge stubborn challenges, discuss strategies for success, and share their vision for the next chapter of climate and sustainability in the higher education sector. This book will be a resource that chronicles the ways in which higher education was ahead of government and private business in tackling climate change, and will inspire the next generation of leaders to take decisive action to fully realize the power of higher education in forging a just transition to a sustainable future.

Target Audience

Now more than ever, all institutions of higher education must lead by example in updating energy and infrastructure, and by providing the skills and knowledge students will require in the workplace and community life. Together, these strategies will contribute to decarbonization and transition to renewable energy, adaptation to the changing climate, and a focus on sustainable development. The chapters within this book will be of interest to campus executives, administrators, sustainability directors, and the faculty working to enhance climate action across the nation.
