Introduction

Historically, technology has been leveraged in educational settings to transmit content knowledge to students in a passive manner, dating back to the advent of the radio all the way up to contemporary digital technologies. So many studies about digital pedagogy utilize knowledge-centric frameworks, such as TPACK (technological pedagogical content knowledge), that do not capture the essence of what it means to learn to develop teaching and learning approaches that are mediated by digital technologies. This book, Cases on Enhancing P-16 Student Engagement with Digital Technologies, will feature educators' and stakeholders' stories and processes that went into forging contemporary teaching and learning approaches with digital technologies. The book will focus on the 'verbs' and what students in the cases did with technologies, along with effectively learning academic content and meeting state and national learning standards.

Objective

This book, Cases on Enhancing P-16 Student Engagement with Digital Technologies, will feature cases of teaching and learning with digital technologies in P-16 educational settings, focusing specifically on what learners do with technology. This book seeks to share cases of teaching in which technologies were leveraged in student-centered ways that transform learning and allow students to engage in authentic, meaningful learning experiences, including those that transcend the brick-and-mortar walls of classrooms and school buildings. The cases in this book should align in theory and principle to Paulo Freire's concept of "problem posing education" rather than "banking education." This book can help shift thinking amongst practitioners about what it means to leverage digital technologies in ways that are unique to the use of technology and make the otherwise impossible not just possible, but probable.

Target Audience

P-16 educators, leaders, stakeholders, and policymakers are the targeted audience of this proposed book to inform and inspire practice and decision-making with how digital technologies are used to transform teaching and learning outcomes. The stories shared in the cases can also inform the design and implementation of teacher education coursework and professional development experiences.
