Are You Ready to Live in the Future?: Smart Spaces, Systems, and Technology, the Next-Generation Trifecta

Technology offers infinite possibilities and potential to improve the human experience. From smart homes to self-driving cars, smart technologies are being developed by the day. One researcher who is helping drive these innovations is IGI Global contributor, Dr. Sergey Balandin from the Finnish-Russian University Cooperation in Telecommunication (FRUCT), who is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Embedded and Real-Time Communication Systems (IJERTCS). He recently shared his thoughts about his research with IGI Global.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?

I have been doing research on smart space technologies for many years now. I like the field because it is full of opportunities to grow and develop. As far as my inspiration is concerned, it is difficult to give one particular reason, as I’m inspired by many factors. However, one of the most notable ones is probably the fact that my team of researchers and I get to make people’s lives better by coming up with new solutions and new products.

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

My area of research is distributed smart spaces, where necessary intelligence and services are provided as a side function of gadgets and devices that surround the user. Nowadays, this is not mainstream, as the majority of solutions use centralized cloud-based intelligence. But personally, I think that a distributed approach and use of otherwise wasted resources of the closest digital devices to the user might result in the best quality of service and will provide the most scalable solution. So, even though our approach is not popular, I’m sure that the results of our current studies will help develop the whole digital services ecosystem in the long run.

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?

Smart systems make it possible to take away the most boring actions that people would otherwise have to spend a lot of their time on. Therefore, this research helps to save peoples’ time so that they can do something more useful, or just enjoy life. In addition, our solutions perform better than human-controlled solutions, which directly result in savings of energy and resources.

What are the future directions of your research areas?

We are already able to create smart services that are distributed over personal gadgets of users. The service space is able to collect a lot of highly relevant information about users’ preferences and lifestyle. So, after a relatively short learning period, the space can well-predict user needs and provide proactive services. What is especially good is that a user doesn’t need to send personal data to some centralized cloud, which is important from a privacy point of view. We are currently working to enable an efficient use of public digital devices, which will temporarily be joined to the personal smart space of the user, and we are continuously working to increase the intelligence of data processing. Moreover, in the future, we are planning to expand the use of smart services to various fields such as fitness and health monitoring.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry/field over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?

There are a lot of innovations and highly promising trends in the field of digital services. Clearly, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality are at the top of the list. I’m trying to follow research in these fields and when relevant, I use some of the research findings in my own work and publications. But generally, my own field of distributed smart spaces is quite large and provides a lot of opportunities and a long list of unanswered questions, so I prefer to primarily focus on research in my field.

What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?

I published a lot of papers, plus one book, with IGI Global and another book is currently under development. I like how processes are set by IGI Global. I get required support from staff and cooperation is generally comfortable. I happily recommend IGI Global to my friends and colleagues.
