Using Data to Prevent ‘Forced Poverty’ as an Outcome of Seeking Proper Healthcare

How can proper data management prevent ‘forced poverty’ among those seeking asssitance in the healthcare system? With data management technology continuously becoming more relevant to everyday research, a problem is presented: is the information being collected and handled properly? Furthermore, how can data management benefit society and create change? These are important questions that can sometimes be overlooked in the desire for producing research-based materials. “The publication of science and education materials is a special art where ethics, moral standards and integrity prevail over profits of economic interest,” states Cees Smit Sibinga, MD, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCPath, from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, who applies the research of data management and its use to his work in the field of medicine and healthcare.

This interdisciplinary topic brings the ethical issues in management of data to the forefront of scientific research and is explored in Prof. Sibinga’s IGI Global publication, Ensuring Research Integrity and the Ethical Management of Data. In the IGI Global interview below, Prof. Sibinga discusses the relevance of his research, both within the fields of research and data management as well as within medicine, and how these two topics intertwine.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in your area of expertise?

I am an academic, clinical hematologist, and transfusion medicine specialist and was privileged with a unique academic chair, International Development of Transfusion Medicine, at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. While working closely together with the World Health Organization (WHO), I discovered an enormous knowledge and science gap in my field of expertise, with an extreme paucity of documented literature. Additionally, I experienced among my peers a general shortage of academic curiosity and interest in the root causes of the observed knowledge and science gap, both in the more advanced as well as in the less advanced part of the world.

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

As mentioned, the extreme paucity of evidence-based research in this section of the health sciences urgently needs focused attention and structured research. That would provide governmental authorities proper documentation to build their policies and strategies on. Providing structured guidance and advice on how to implement and create sustainable systems in line with the United Nations (UN) and WHO recommendations1, based on the distinguished research areas, and appropriate management of data might lead the way to sustained improvement in quality of life to the benefit of the community.

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?

The benefits of my research are changes in the political, societal, and health professional awareness of the need for a well-functioning and integrated health care system, accessible and affordable for all, and preventing ‘forced poverty’ as an outcome of seeking proper health care. My steadily growing library of evidence-based and peer-reviewed research publications in this specific field already serves as an international reference and might prevent unnecessary reinventing of wheels. Cooperation and collaboration providing synergy are paramount.

What are the future directions of your research areas?

The first direction is creating an active interest and awareness among scientists related to the field of transfusion medicine as a bridging science and integral part of healthcare. Second would be deepening and extending the various areas of this research into a series of different disciplines such as medical sociology, environmental psychology, economy and econometrics, pharmaco-economics, law and human rights, behavioral science, education and management science, and anthropology.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?

There is a growing awareness of needs analysis, particularly in education, because of the speed of developments of new approaches and technologies in the advanced world, which are not always that easy and simple to follow in less advanced parts of the world. As a result, there is the growing threat of widening and deepening the existing gap between these parts of the world instead of acceptably narrowing and eventually closing the gap. Ensuring Research Integrity and the Ethical Management of Data sets a pace because the underlying case is the real-time experiences in the academic science and education world from a developing country.
