Securing Funding For Your Open Access Research: Where to Begin?

By IGI Global Open Access Division on Jan 17, 2022
As OA publications continue to trend upwards, authors and researchers who submit their work as OA, either as an individual journal article, book chapter, or full book, continue to experience the ever-present struggles of finding a funding body to sponsor their work. As it is commonly known, open access publications require the payment of article processing charges (APCs), chapter processing charges (CPCs), and book processing charges (BPCs) to cover the costs associated with OA publishing, including digital tools used to manage the manuscript submission and review process, typesetting, online hosting, and overall production of the manuscript.

We recognize that many researchers may not know where to begin when searching for OA funding opportunities. IGI Global recently launched an Open Access Funding Resources page for researchers to browse. This page provides a comprehensive list of OA funding sources available for researchers to secure funds for their various OA publications. The sources available are split into two different funding lists. The first is by foundations and associations, for those who are seeking outside of their affiliation/university and are possibly looking for sources in their home country or a foundation with a specialized topic interest. The second is by institutions and universities. Researchers can browse this list to determine if their university offers any open access funding support, or if they participate in any publisher agreements that offer OA funding, discounts, or waivers. Each funding resource also provides a link to its OA policy and pertinent details and information.
Some important questions to ask as you determine which funding sources to approach, are:
  1. What are their specific objectives and criteria?
  2. What do they offer?
  3. Who are their predominant stakeholders?
  4. Who are serving as the reviewers, board members, or panel members?
  5. Will you have freedom to publish and what are the policies surrounding ownership of intellectual property rights?
  6. Are there any other special requirements or policies?
Also, it’s important to consider whether or not the funding source is one that your institution would be willing to collaborate and/or partner with. Checking with your university grants office on any conditions they have is very important.
IGI Global also encourages prospective OA authors to visit SPARC, Open Access Directory (OAD), and Sherpa Juliet for additional OA funding resources and policies.
Please direct any questions or inquiries regarding OA funding and processing charges to IGI Global’s Open Access Division at openaccessadmin@igi-global.com.
