8 Million Students Missing...

How Schools Are Combating Chronic Absenteeism

By Brittany Haynes on Jan 13, 2020
According to a recent EdTech article, a national and state initiative called Attendance Works reported that 8 million K-12 students were chronically absent from school during the 2015–2016 school year. This means that 1 in 7 students missed 15 or more days of school.

With the concern of increased dropout rates, schools are now harnessing the latest data analysis and mobile technology to combat this staggering statistic. This includes creating a comprehensive “data dashboard” for administrators to see real-time data on student attendance, as well as integrating Google Classroom for parents to access these records and actively review their child’s overall engagement in class. With the introduction of these new systems, schools are also able to integrate an automatic phone notification system that will alert parents if their child skips class, as well as provide automatic "wake-up calls" to students from their favorite celebrities to encourage them to attend school.

In advance of these methods and technologies, IGI Global continues to publish the most innovative content on educational technologies to increase student engagement and empower teachers in implementing the newest pedagogy and instructional methodologies. This includes the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Fourth Edition (10 Volumes), edited by Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, D.B.A., from Information Resources Management Association, USA, which covers findings on mobile technology in the classroom, digital instructional design, and administration. This publication is featured in IGI Global's InfoSci®-Books database (5,300+ e-books). Recommend IGI Global's InfoSci-Books database to your library to have access to this critical research, along with the featured chapters below, which are available in the aforementioned Encyclopedia, and receive 100% OA APC waivers when your work is submitted and accepted into an IGI Global journal.
