Who is Responsible for the Plague of Plagiarism in Academia?

In an era of “publish or perish” and copy-and-paste, plagiarism is rapidly taking over the scholarly community. Headlines are being produced each day around the latest plagiarism news, ranging from scholars at Columbia University being guilty of plagiarizing parts of an award-winning book, presidents of universities getting fired, as well as questions about if a new South Africa Copyright bill promotes the idea of intellectual theft.

According to an AAAS Science article, the number of articles retracted due to fraud has nearly doubled since 2000. Although awareness in this trend is increasing, the question remains of who is ultimately responsible for calling out these academic infractions. With ethical standards varying from country to country and only a small portion of the academic community calling out plagiarism, editors, authors, publishers, and the overall academic community are being challenged with fully understanding the “prevalence, causes, and impacts” of this trend.
