Neeta Baporikar
, Director/Professor (Business Management) Harold Graduate School of Business, Namibia University of Science and Technology, Namibia. With more than a decade of experience in industry, consultancy and training, she made a lateral switch to research and academics in 1995. Dr. Baporikar holds D.Sc. (Management Studies) USA, PhD in Management, University of Pune India with MBA (Distinction) and Law (Hons.) degrees. Apart from this, she is also an External Reviewer, Oman Academic Accreditation Authority, Accredited Management Teacher, Qualified Trainer, Doctoral Guide and Board Member of Academics and Advisory Committee in accredited B-Schools. Reviewer for international journals, she has to her credit 5 conferred doctorates, several refereed research papers, and authored books in the area of Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Management and Higher Education. Here, Dr. Baporikar speaks on her experience in academic publication, in collaborating with research professionals around the world and publishing with IGI Global.
Tell us about yourself. How did you become involved with IGI Global?
Currently, I am Professor/Director in Business Management at Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business (HP-GSB), at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, in Namibia, Africa. Prior to this, I was a Head of Scientific Research, Sultanate of Oman, Ministry of Higher Education CAS-Salalah, and a Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at premier institution/universities - IIIT Pune and BITS India. A Principal Consultant/Trainer for the Bhutan German Seed Project Officials of Bhutan, HRD Consultants, with more than a decade of corporate experience with Kirloskar Group, Finolex Group, and Maschinenfabrik Polygraph Ltd, I made a lateral switch to research and academics in 1995. With excellent academic credentials, I hold D.Sc. (Management Studies) USA, PhD in Management, University of Pune INDIA with MBA (Distinction) and Law (Hons.) degrees. Apart from this I am an External Reviewer, Oman Academic Accreditation Authority, Accredited Management Teacher (AIMA), Qualified Trainer (ISTD), Doctoral Guide, International PhD Examiner, and Board Member of Academics and Advisory Committee in accredited B-Schools. Reviewer for international journals, with 5 conferred doctorates to my credit and several refereed research papers. I have also authored more than 21 titles in the area of Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Management and Higher Education.
My involvement with IGI Global began in 2011 when I received an invitation to be on the Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) of an IGI-edited book by a professor of knowledge management. Since, I also had moved to academics and research with a quest for knowledge. The title fascinated me and I decided to join the EAB and also contributed a chapter. From then on, I must say, it has been a wonderful journey of self-learning and advancement, both scholastically and professionally.
I particularly relish my association with IGI Global, be it in the role of editor, contributor, reviewer, or reader, because I enjoy the challenge of synthesizing my knowledge to create a more simple solution for the complex needs of educational institutions and the greater needs of the knowledge society. This is a continuum and not as a one-off activity. I feel very happy IGI has been a catalyst to enable me to serve the future generation through my publications, to infuse innovative and creative strategies for all – students, academia, practitioners and knowledge seekers- and thus ensure that together as partners, researchers, and publishers, we succeed. My foremost philosophy is to spend the necessary time it takes to build great relationships with all the stakeholders of academia and knowledge world.
Why do you choose IGI Global as your publisher?
When more than 10 contributed chapters were published and I had been on EAB of most of these books, I received an invite to consider publishing a complete edited book. At the same time, since I already had published about 10 titles through other publishers, and not having a great experience, I was also on a lookout for quality publisher. So, the invite seemed God-sent. Hence, my reason to choose IGI as my publisher was humble – the efficiency, professionalism of IGI team, online systems and above all quality of publications and the excellent support given to the editor and contributors. Today, with more than sixty publications with IGI inclusive of invited chapters, journal papers, handbooks of research, and more than 10 in the making, I can say that my decision to choose IGI and partner for publishing has been one of the finest.
How do you achieve success in regards to your publications? How do you increase the chances for positive reviews and indexing?
Apart from the time I spend in in planning and scheduling, I am firm believer in a cooperative and collaborative approach. In order to make my book projects/publications run smoothly and seamlessly, I first coordinate all the details and pen them down thoroughly. Specifically, I focus on interests and commitment to contribution across academic colleagues and associates globally. I do not also hesitate to initiate a communication via email or call to straighten out details to get everyone on the same page. I do push for efficiency and timeliness, but ensure diplomacy and tactfulness, and somehow manage to leave everyone contented at the end of the project and maybe even smiling!
My timely publications are the only proof to recognize my talent and spirit, but undoubtedly, after the project ends, I receive several emails from contributors, reviewers and editorial advisory board members from across the globe who not only compliment the efforts and publication and also how well-run it was, but also expressing their desire to collaborate on for future projects. This is all I think, due to extraordinary academic spirits and the quest for knowledge I seem to be endowed with.
What do you require from your title contributors to maintain and build your publication’s reputation?
Apart from their normal contribution of quality chapters and help with the review process, I expect and require that they are committed from the beginning. They need to manage, organize and track details both large and small within their busy work environment with grace and skill. Though I am always willing to negotiate; the responsibilities of providing excellent contribution to the publication rests with them and I can say humbly that until now I have been able to strike a win-win situation with my contributors to ensure and build on both the publication and publisher's reputation.
Each day of the publication process, without fail, I ensure that all the prospective and actual contributors are facilitated and provided with any materials and information needed. In addition, I am always willing to take care of any specific needs to make sure the book project runs smoothly. Of course, this has been achieved by support from the contributors and reviewers which leads to high morale. I also make time for my contributors and provide them with the best support, both academic and otherwise when need be, but more importantly, I devote patient listening to their concerns and try to resolve conflicts and handle difficult situations with remarkable patience and positivity. On the whole, I require that my contributors love knowledge creation, work hard, and always try to lift the spirits of other researchers and knowledge creators. I can modestly say that more than 50 new researchers have been introduced to IGI in the process of my two handbook of research published in last two years and a few more through book projects currently in process.
How can other researchers maximize exposure and increase the likelihood of indexing for their publications? What resources are required?
No matter how busy we as individuals are with our job, university, and other commitments, it is important as researchers to maximize the exposure and increase the likelihood of indexing for our publications. Some of things which need to be done to ensure it are:
- Adopt a mentor policy – that is when anybody, even if inexperienced and fresh in the field of academics or teaching, expresses an interest to contribute- nurture them and handhold if required. They are best brand ambassadors for your publications.
- Share your research with colleagues and students – students are a great source for increasing visibility of your publications which ultimately maximizes exposure and increases citation, which has a snowball effect on indexing.
- Network and be genuine about your research and academic credentials – in the world of knowledge creation, data and information is not as important as knowledge and wisdom.
- Recognize and appreciate one another's research by writing reviews and recommending where possible but also suitable. "Rarer than the ability is the ability to recognize ability," is true and important in widening the exposure of publications.
- Adopt a holistic policy – last but not the least, adopt an all-inclusive policy by avoiding bias when it comes to contribution; be in the form of chapters or being on the EAB or writing foreword, etc. Good deeds don’t go to waste and they will come back to you in plenty.
Some other resources required are: varied and numerous affiliations, be it in academic capacity as senators, board members, examiners, moderators, etc., or in professional capacity including professional memberships, tech savviness and ability to use IT and social media effectively for better impact.
Do you execute personal promotions to support your publications? What specifically?
Yes. I do make conscious efforts to promote and support my publications by recommending it to the various universities and institutions I am associated with, especially in India, Middle East, South Africa and Namibia. Apart from that, I mention it to students who are pursuing Master’s and PhD programs. In addition, I also list it on my social media and listservs wherever possible. Whenever I attend conferences or academic deliberations, I also make it a point to endorse the IGI Global publications in general, particularly my publications. The other subtle but most effective way is I motivate and try to include in my books chapter contributions from emerging and developing countries so that the publication's reach widens and deepens.
