Bringing Awareness to National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Why Human Trafficking Spikes During the NFL Super Bowl

By IGI Global on Jan 27, 2020

As many are gearing up for the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl kickoff and gameday festivities, millions are expected to travel by planes, trains, and automobiles to Miami, Florida, USA. During this highly populated event there is a surge in criminal activity which includes human and drug trafficking. With over 24.9 million people being trafficked and over 1.8 million children exploited globally, government officials, hospitality organizations, airlines, non-profits, and the NFL are joining forces to create awareness and prevention of this peak time for this exploitation.

As a part of this effort, they are taking part in the eighth Super Bowl campaign hosted by “It’s a Penalty,” a global non-governmental organization that combats human trafficking. According to a recent press release from the organization, this campaign will include training hotel workers around identifying and reporting human trafficking, having Uber drivers display rearview tags for the National Human Trafficking Hotline, distributing awareness kits to Miami hotels, as well as airing a 30-second campaign video on all American Airlines and British Airways inbound flights to Miami. Additionally, they hosted a “No Room for Trafficking” event urging hotels, nationally and internationally, to look for signs of human trafficking, even outside of these large sporting events.

January has been recognized as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and in support of raising awareness about these crimes, IGI Global is committed to publishing content that triggers important discussions surrounding human trafficking, child exploitation, cyber harassment, psychological violence, and criminology. IGI Global’s latest major reference work, the Encyclopedia of Criminal Activities and the Deep Web (3 Volumes), which includes some of the latest research articles contributed by hundreds of experts in the field from around the globe, will undoubtedly play a significant role in examining how criminals are developing more advanced strategies to expand their criminal enterprises and utilizing the deep web to facilitate trafficking and exploitative crimes.
