Dr. Selladurai shares his high-speed rail vision in an IGI Global interview

How the High-Speed Rail System is Radically Changing the Transportation Industry: Hear From Expert Dr. Raj Selladurai

By Sharlene Oong on Feb 14, 2019
Internationally and nationally, high-speed rail is now overtaking air travel as it is an easier, affordable, and more sustainable form of transportation. This form of transportation, an enhancement of the traditional passenger railroad service, allows passengers to travel at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour (mph), limiting the overall commute time and travel costs. Nations such as Japan and France have already implemented this transportation method for decades, and are looking to enhance their passenger rail systems, serving as examples of the high-speed rail revolution for other countries, as many are seeing this form of transportation gain the interest of policymakers, technology developers, and more. Dr. Raj Selladurai from Indiana University Northwest, USA, explains how his IGI Global publication, Emerging Challenges and Opportunities of High Speed Rail on Business and Society, will help facilitate this high-speed rail vision, in an IGI Global interview.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in your research area?

One of my current research interests is high-speed rail which is the subject of our second IGI Global book, Emerging Challenges and Opportunities of High Speed Rail on Business and Society. During a visit to Europe, a few universities in Austria and Switzerland invited me to lecture to their business students. While staying and traveling in Europe, I became fascinated with the trains which was the most convenient form of transportation that we frequently used. This fascination continued even after we returned home to the U.S., inspiring me to transform the high-speed rail vision, to make high-speed rail a reality in the U.S., and “make America travel by rail again!”

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

My ongoing research in high-speed rail would enable me to make long-lasting contributions and “add major value” to the relatively new fields of study, therefore, inspiring others to continue conducting research in these respective fields. If we, in the U.S., can catch up soon to many of the European and Asian countries in terms of frequency and use of high-speed rail for our travel, that vision will become a reality, making it a major travel revolution by providing many positive benefits for all our people in the country. We will certainly be able to make America travel by rail again!

What are the future directions of your research areas?

In relation to high-speed rail, I would like to continue research on needs analysis, cost-benefit analysis, public and private funding strategies, and formulating/planning and implementing of the high-speed rail vision into reality. We would like to emphasize effective networking and collaborative partnerships between many stakeholders with common mutually-beneficial goals and outcomes. We would like to see America travel by rail again, especially in specific areas of the U.S. including California and the Southeast corridors, Florida, Texas-Oklahoma, Illinois-Indiana, the Midwest, and Northeast USA corridors.

What has your experience been like publishing with IGI Global?

Highly satisfactory! I have received the total support, timely advice, guidance, and help, which enabled me to complete my book projects on time. However, the projects involved lot of hard work, many hours, and perseverance. I truly found the experience fulfilling and worthwhile! I am inspired to move forward towards working on my next editions! Thanks to the excellent staff of IGI Global who were assigned to work with me over the years.
We would like to thank Dr. Selladurai for sharing his research on high-speed rail.
Dr. Selladurai’s publication, Emerging Challenges and Opportunities of High-Speed Rail Development on Business and Society, is available through IGI Global’s world-renowned InfoSci®-Books, a database of 4,500+ reference books with nearly 100,000 full-text chapters focusing on emerging research. With an annual subscription offered as low as US$ 8,580 US$ 6,435* (perpetual purchase offered as low as US$ 17,500 US$ 13,125**), this database hosts key features such as full-text PDF and HTML format, no DRM, unlimited simultaneous users, and no embargo of content (research is available months in advance of the print release). Spanning across 350+ topics in 11 core subject areas, including business and management, computer science, education, engineering, social sciences and humanities, and more, this robust research database is ideal for academic and research institutions. Purchase or recommend this database to your institution’s librarian.
Due to the overwhelming success of IGI Global’s Open Access (OA) (Offset Model) Initiative that is offered through our InfoSci®-Journals database (nearly 25,000 peer-reviewed articles sourced from 185+ scholarly journals), we have extended this initiative to apply to our InfoSci-Books database (4,500+ reference books).

As such, when an institution invests in IGI Global’s InfoSci-Books and/or InfoSci-Journals database, IGI Global will match the library’s investment with a fund of equal value to go toward subsidizing the OA article processing charges (APCs) for their faculty at that institution when their work is accepted under OA into an IGI Global journal.***
