Dr. Mesquita explains the importance of studying Gen. Z's interaction with technology
How is Generation Z Changing the Business Landscape? Hear From Expert Dr. Anabela Mesquita
By
Sharlene Oong
on
Feb 7, 2019
While technology has accelerated the pace of innovations and global interaction, it has a
new audience
to adhere to; Generation Z, (born mid-1990s to now, according to demographers). As Generation Z were born during the age of technology, they are known to stand out from previous generations in their dependency on Information Communications Technology (ICT) for communicating, working, and socializing. However, Generation Z is projected to comprise of the global population of
7.7 billion
in 2019, driving businesses to gear and rethink their marketing and hiring strategies.
In order to better understand the interaction between Generation Z and technology, researchers are investigating how information systems impact people within organizations, including
Dr. Anabela Mesquita
, from ISCAP/IPP and Algoritmi Centre, University of Minho, Portugal, and Editor-in-Chief of
International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction
(IJTHI).
Dr. Mesquita
goes in detail about the different ways generations interact with information systems in an IGI Global interview.
What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?
I belong to Generation X and I grew up in an environment where computers were beginning to have its place and importance. When technology started to evolve, I realized that I was attracted to pursuing research in computer and information technology field. I wanted to know more about the implementation of information systems within organizations, as well as their impact on people, the way they conduct tasks, the way they interact within different fields and organizational cultures. Since then (more than 20 years ago), I conduct research in information systems, as well as their impact on people and organizations.
Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?
We need to look at these fields in a systemic way - where changes in one field impact others as well. I cannot imagine a situation where information systems are implemented based only on its productivity and efficiency. What about the way people will communicate, or interact? How will they feel, react, and work after the implementation of the system? All dimensions of the organization need to be taken into consideration.
In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?
Currently, my research is focused on the personal and professional development of people through the use of technology which is becoming more relevant due to our ever-evolving environment. People need to develop the right competences and skills in order to face daily challenges in any situation, including those in organizations.
How does your research set the pace the evolving research trends you foresee in the future?
Not only did I study about the personal and professional development of people, I also uncovered developments within social media, as they play a key role in the communication and interaction of people inside and outside organizations. Communication has changed, as we want everything right here and right now, leaving no borders between work and leisure time. However, when we communicate with Generation Z, we discover they have developed a different way to interact with work and technologies. We need to understand how they think, how they are reacting to these challenges, and situations in order to be able to meet their needs and expectations regarding the use of technologies. A lot will still be said and done concerning the use of technologies and their role in organizations.
What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?
I am the Editor-in-Chief of the
International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction
(IJTHI)
for 10 years now. Previously, I was the Associate Editor for the same journal. My experience has always been very good. They supported me in
50+ contributions
, including
Human Behavior, Psychology, and Social Interaction in the Digital Era
and
User Perception and Influencing Factors of Technology in Everyday Life
. In every situation, my experience has been very positive.
We would like to thank
Dr. Mesquita
for sharing her research on business communication, human-computer interaction, and digital storytelling.
