The open access (OA) movement is invaluable during a time when free and accessible research is needed to drive innovation and solve the world’s problems. However, as with everything, nothing is ever completely free. Most OA opportunities require the payment of a publication processing charge to offset the costs associated with the services that must be performed to publish manuscripts—costs that were previously covered by subscription revenue. These charges ensure the sustainability of the publication. While OA is desirable as it allows content to be freely distributed to all, researchers are faced with the difficulty of finding funding to cover these processing charges.
IGI Global understands the hardship that may follow trying to secure funding as we try to make OA publishing affordable for all. We recognize that many researchers may not even know where to begin when searching for OA funding opportunities. Thankfully, there are many resources out there that are set up specifically for researchers who are publishing their work as OA.
- Publisher & University/Institution Agreements: Many publishers have teamed up with university libraries to set up specific OA agreements. IGI Global’s own Read & Publish Initiative is one such program that gives any library that invests in IGI Global’s e-Collections flexible funding that goes towards OA APC waivers, converting a journal to Platinum OA, and OA book funding should that library’s faculty/staff be accepted into an IGI Global publication. (This fund will be offered on an annual basis when libraries maintain OA agreements with IGI Global). Check Eligibility
- Open Access Directory: The Open Access Directory maintains a list of institutional funds for OA publishing.
- SPARC: SPARC maintains a list specifically of North American universities and university libraries with allocated OA funds.
- Sherpa Juliet: Sherpa Juliet is a searchable database for researchers to use to find research funders’ OA policies to see if their research qualifies.
- General University/Institution Open Access Funds – Check with your university/institution’s library as many have dedicated OA funds for their faculty and staff.
IGI Global is committed to supporting researchers with their OA publishing endeavors. We currently have 61 Gold OA journals available for OA publications, as well as the opportunity to publish OA in any of our Hybrid OA journals. In addition to journals, IGI Global also provides book chapter and full book publishing for authors and researchers. Our Article Processing Charges (APCs), Book Publishing Charges (BPCs), and Chapter Publishing Charges (CPCs) vary.
