Iranian Earthquakes Prompt Upgraded Seismic Codes

Earthquakes in Dubai: Are Buildings Safe?

People poured into the streets of Dubai after buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure when two earthquakes shook Iran in April. One registered a 6.3 magnitude. Dubai officials got the necessary push to update building requirements in regards to the seismic code, which has been under review since 2009.

According to a BBC report, Dubai’s new regulations will require buildings between 5-10 floors to withstand 5.5 on the Richter scale and buildings with more than 10 floors to withstand 5.9 on the Richter scale. These new regulations will add to roughly a 5-10% increase in concrete strength within buildings, and will also increase the total cost of new building construction between 2-3% for a 10-20 story building.

Many companies with longstanding buildings have consulted with firms to evaluate the safety of their structures. Going forward, buildings will be required to comply with the new seismic code and to implement control systems. Some of these measures are suggested in the IGI Global title Design Optimization of Active and Passive Structural Control Systems, edited by Nikos D. Lagaros (National Technical University of Athens, Greece), Vagelis Plevris (School of Pedagogical & Technological Education, Athens, Greece) and Chara Ch Mitropoulou (National Technical University of Athens, Greece). This publication includes research topics such as Earthquake Engineering and Tuned Mass Damper, and logistics such as Vibration Control, Variable Stiffness Systems, and Seismic Damage Identification, with a focus on design optimization of active and passive control systems.

Design Optimization of Active and Passive Structural Control Systems is an outstanding tool to assist in the implementation and development of engineering that will help not only Dubai, but also other countries and cities in earthquake-prone areas, raising structures that can withstand natural disaster. The value of research in evaluating and developing earthquake-strong structures is immeasurable; it is knowledge that directly saves lives. With resources such as this, we can learn together and collaborate to build a more stable future.
