Data Mining Gets Fashionable

By IGI Global on Feb 4, 2011
Most fashion trends traditionally start from major designers and trickle down to consumers. In other major industries, however, demand is dictated by the consumer, so why shouldn't consumers' voices be heard in fashion? A new website called Polyvore is beginning to help retailers use data to create new trends based on what their customers like and want. Website users can log on and create collages of their favorite outfits and trends that look like layouts in a fashion magazine. A new collage is made every three seconds by one of the website's users. The immense amount of data now available on the website can be viewed and used by both designers and consumers to get ideas about new available trends.

Visit http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/01/31/am-polyvorecom-uses-data-to-track-fashion-trends/ for more on this story, or visit www.polyvore.com/ to start creating your own fashion sets. Who knows what major retailers will use your ideas in their next line?
