Abstract

Sexting has been defined as the exchange of sexually explicit materials via electronic means, such as text message or social media, and it has been emerging as a trend among young adults. This qualitative research project seeks to understand the extent of this phenomenon among college women, situating the practice within hookup culture. Using focus group data, this chapter examines how and why young women engage in sexting. Results show that young women do not approach sexting casually, although many do it to add “spice” to their relationships.

Background

Technology plays a major role in young adults' lives. From online platforms in education to the proliferation of social media, it is undeniable that technology is ubiquitous among the young (Ringrose et al., 2012; Salter et al., 2013). For today's emergent adults, smart phones are not just commonplace, they are normalized, with studies indicating that young people prefer to communicate via text message (Drouin & Landgraff, 2012; Ogletree et al., 2014). Contemporary young people have even been referred to as the “net generation” (Delevi & Weisskirch, 2013, p. 2592). Given the prominence of technology in society as well as young adulthood being a time to establish a sexual identity (Thompson, 1995) the use of technology within young people's sexual lives is unsurprising.
