Description & Coverage
Description:

Knowledge surrounding the behavior of earth materials is important to a number of industries, including the mining and construction industries. Further research into the field of geotechnical engineering can assist in providing the tools necessary to analyze the condition and properties of the earth.

Technology and Practice in Geotechnical Engineering brings together theory and practical application, thus offering a unified and thorough understanding of soil mechanics. Highlighting illustrative examples, technological applications, and theoretical and foundational concepts, this book is a crucial reference source for students, practitioners, contractors, architects, and builders interested in the functions and mechanics of sedimentary materials.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Compressibility and Consolidation
  • Earth Pressure
  • Elements and Compounds
  • Seepage
  • Soil Classification
  • Soil Structure
  • Soil Types
  • Stress Concepts
  • Weathering
Reviews & Statements

Adeyeri presents a textbook he has developed over many years of teaching soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geotechnical engineering at the university and polytechnic levels. His discussion of theory focuses primarily on an elementary treatment of the analysis of soil masses using classical elasticity and plasticity theory, recognizing that analysis is a means and not an end in itself, because the primary objective of the geotechnical engineer is to design, not just analyze. To that end, he includes many practical exercises to give students experience putting theory into practice.

Editor/Author Biographies
Professor Adeyeri is a professor of Civil Engineering and a professional engineer of many years standing. He has worked for a wide variety of private, public and intergovernmental organizations in teaching, research, public service and consulting. He was at one time a Regional Adviser to the United Nations on Science and Technology and at another time the pioneer Rector of Ondo State Polytechnic now Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State . He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) from New York University, M.E from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York and the PhD degree with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. His teaching career has taken him to many institutions, including Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; University of Ado-Ekiti; Howard University, Washington, DC, USA; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State and currently Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ikole campus. His research interests include constitutive modeling of soils, viscoelasticity and the analysis of mat on visco-elastic foundations, lateritic soil reinforcement with non-traditional materials, rational procedures for pavement design and the characterization of road base materials and the use of recycled asphalts as highway base material. Professor Adeyeri is a registered Professional Engineer in Nigeria and in the District of Columbia, United States of America. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a member of the ASCE. He had served on many committees of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering Practice in Nigeria. He is a member of the “Soil and Rocks” and “Cement and Aggregates” Committees of the ASTM International.
