Description & Coverage
Description:

Video games are now a ubiquitous form of media used by the majority of the American population. However, the academic research field surrounding this genre does not accurately reflect the pervasive influence of video games. The field of library and information sciences helps provide the necessary foundational support for this media.

Integrating Video Game Research and Practice in Library and Information Science brings together video gaming culture and its unique forms of communication with information behavior research. By detailing the nuances of video games and their influence, this reference book reveals communication patterns within society and provides comprehensive background and analysis for libraries, librarians, and information professionals.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Collection Development
  • Education
  • Gaming Spaces
  • Information Seeking Behavior
  • User Centered Design
  • User experience
  • Video Game Communication
  • Video Game Culture
  • Video Games
Reviews & Statements

Ratliff, an independent researcher, examines the integration of video game research and practice into library and information science. He discusses how video games and players are classified, how players communicate, how video games affect health, and impacts on society in terms of violence, player behavior, and free speech and censorship, as well as the government and legal level. He then explains how games can be used for literacy and educational purposes, practical applications in libraries, the information behavior of game players, and user-centered design.

Jacob Ratliff is currently an avid video game player and information nerd who works a day job at a special library as a taxonomist, archivist, and all around info pro to support all of the other fun things that life has to offer.
