Abstract

Improving mobility support is a crucial task in low power and lossy networks (LLN). This article proposes an enhanced mobility support routing protocol (EM-RPL) to improve the mobility support for LLN. It has two processes, static node parent selection, and mobile node parent selection. The static node parent selection process uses the routing metrics, residual energy (RER), and load to choose the optimal parent for data transfer. The mobile node parent selection process has two phases, data transmission, and route discovery. Its handoff decision calculates from the received signal strength (RSSI) and packet error ratio (PER). The simulation is conducted using COOJA simulator. The performance of EM-RPL is compared with similar routing protocols. The simulation result shows that EM-RPL gives significant performance in terms of power consumption, latency, packet delivery ratio and packet overhead.
